Have you thought about exporting your soy products?
Similar to the United States, demand for and consumption of
soyfoods continues to grow globally. For example, Western
Europe has seen significant growth in an assortment of soy
foods
ranging from beverages, to desserts, to yogurts, and more,
in recent years. Data shows Western European growth of
greater than 20 percent year over year, with little indication
of a slow down any time soon. Some countries, such as
Germany and Spain are showing even greater acceleration
than the above rate. Recent global studies show an overall
growing concern about health, and a focus on healthy
eating. All of this data supports an ongoing increase in the
consumption of soy based foods.
When considering opportunities abroad, don’t just consider
the familiar markets of Europe. Traditional soy consuming
markets like those of Southeast and East Asia continue to
expand. While some markets, especially in Southeast Asia
have typically presented challenges with regards to price
sensitivity, the average disposable income in many of these
countries continues to rise dramatically. Further, these
markets which
once offered very generic versions of soy foods are seeing
an explosion in demand for new soy based options. Soy has
been
consumed in these markets for multiple generations. But,
like the west, consumers are requiring a wider selection of
innovative soy products, and they are often willing to
pay a premium. The market for packaged soy beverages in
Southeast Asia is
on target to reach at least $500 million by 2010! Further,
nearly 60 percent of all soy beverages are being purchased
through the supermarket channels. These two figures show
the amazing changes in market dynamics, and the expanding
opportunities for soy food in just the past several years.
The U.S. market maintains a healthy rate of growth for soy
foods. Still, opportunities abound for those brands willing to
look beyond our borders. Early movers with healthy,
innovative, and properly positioned products stand an excellent
chance of success with exports.
